Steel Bridge Team going for 5 consecutive years as regional champions
NJIT has the best Steel Bridge Team in our region. For four consecutive years they have won the Metropolitan Regional Steel Bridge Competition. The NJIT students beat out teams from Columbia University, Rutgers University, the College of New Jersey, Stevens Institute of Technology and other schools from the metro region. This year they placed 19th at the National Competition out of 180 teams that participated.
The Steel Bridge Team is now preparing for the 2009 Competition in their run for five consecutive years as regional champions. To get a jump on the competition, the students have already begun their task of designing and constructing a 1/10 scale steel bridge that can withstand a load of 2,500 pounds. Charles Lubetkin, of Verona, Donates Sports Scholarship to NJIT
NEWARK, Nov. 11, 2008—NJIT has received a donation of $30,000 from Charles Lubetkin, of Verona. The money has been earmarked for the Lubetkin Family Soccer Endowed Scholarship fund.
"We are grateful for the generous and sustained support of Bernie and Beverly Lubetkin and the Lubetkin brothers," said Charles R. Dees, Jr., NJIT vice president University Advancement and president of the Foundation at NJIT.
Charles Lubetkin graduated with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 1953 from NJIT’s predecessor institution--Newark College of Engineering (NCE). Bernard, as well as another Lubetkin brother, Seymour, also graduated from what was then the state’s premier, public, four-year engineering institution.
A local boy who grew up in Newark, Charles’ NJIT career straddled the worlds of athletics and academics. As an undergraduate, he played on the school’s basketball and track teams.
"Tudy Lubetkin, was outstanding as a prolific scorer for the basketball team at Newark College of Engineering from 1950-53," said Lenny Kaplan, executive director of athletics at NJIT. "He also set a New Jersey meet record in the pole vault. To this day he remains a great supporter of NJIT athletics."
While at NJIT, Charles was a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society, a national leadership honor society. In 1994, Charles was inducted into the NJIT Athletics Hall of Fame. Charles currently serves on NJIT’s Athletic Advisory Board.
"As a former athlete, Charles Lubetkin appreciates the towns and communities that impacted his life and helped him understand the importance of hard work and a quality education in the State of New Jersey," said Richard Rau, NJIT development officer. "Charles Lubetkin’s preference for the endowed family scholarship he established at NJIT is directed to a student from Livingston, Orange, Weequahic, Randolph and/or West Orange high schools."
