In only 25 years, the College of Science and Liberal Arts has evolved and grown from being NJIT’s Third College into a prominent academic unit of the university. Our students, faculty staff, alumni, and supporters have all played a part in making CSLA successful. We have a history to be proud of as we celebrate a quarter of a century helping NJIT students achieve their educational and career goals. Growing steadily ever since, CSLA has spawned two of NJIT’s six schools and colleges: the Albert Dorman Honors College, which evolved out of the Honors Program that was founded in CSLA in 1985, and the College of Computing Sciences, which developed out of CSLA’s Computer and Information Science Department. Today the college consists of six academic departments - Biological Sciences (Federated with Rutgers-Newark), Chemistry and Environmental Science, History (Federated with Rutgers-Newark), Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, and Physics - all of which are active not only in educating our students but also in research. CSLA also houses the Department of Aerospace
Studies, the NJIT component of the Rutgers/NJIT Theatre Arts Program, the Center for Applied Mathematics and Statistics, the Microelectronics Research Center, and the Center for Solar Research - which operates the Big Bear Solar Observatory and Owen’s Valley Solar Array, acquired from California Institute of Technology in 1997.

CSLA is distinct among the colleges and schools of NJIT in terms of its breadth and the interconnections it fosters among diverse disciplines in the sciences and the liberal arts. We offer a broadly based liberal arts and science education and our mission is to ensure that that all NJIT graduates can formulate significant questions, think analytically, offer creative solutions, and communicate them effectively. Our courses are designed to provide such skills to students in order for them to achieve professional success. The boundaries between the College’s academic departments and programs are flexible and the common commitment to the General University Requirements brings an exceptional unity to the various interacting parts of CSLA.

In addition to its service mission, CSLA offers its own degree programs at all levels of education. On the sciences side, we have degree programs in biology, chemistry, environmental science/policy, mathematical sciences, and physics. We offer a unique approach to the liberal arts -- one that addresses the impact of science and technology on society. Students can choose from programs in communication, history, and science/technology/society, and a teacher certification program (offered jointly with Rutgers-Newark). Our undergraduate degrees in the sciences and the liberal arts offer a strong start for a career in medicine and law.

In addition to offering strong academic programs, CSLA is achieving national prominence by enhancing its reputation for outstanding, cutting-edge research. CSLA boasts a majority of very accomplished faculty members in all of its departments who excel in teaching and research. This is the essence of our focus on expanding research accomplishments. We have made major strides in research and scholarship as evidenced by the quality and quantity of our research publications and the level of research expenditures that has now reached nearly ten million dollars.

These achievements give testimony to CSLA’s efforts to continue to pursue excellence in education and research with dedication and commitment.
