OU Faculty Are Recognized for Entrepreneurial Spirit

Congratulations to James Sluss, Academic Director and Morris R. Pitman Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering; John Fagan, David Ross Boyd Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering; and Peter McFetridge Assistant Professor, School of Chemical, Biological and Materials Engineering. These entrepreneurs were recognized at the 2007 Innovator of the Year Awards as heading companies on the brink of becoming innovative leaders.

Dr. McFetridge received the award for his work on umbilical cord tissue engineering. He developed a process for using umbilical cords to produce a uniform material for bypass and other tissue grafting applications.

Drs. Sluss and Fagan were recognized for LENS, Leading Edge Navigation Solutions LLC, based on research and development of a precise mobile landing system for planes that eliminates weather as an issue for landing aircraft.

W. Arthur 'Skip' Porter
W. Arthur ‘Skip’ Porter, former dean of engineering and founding director of the Center for the Creation of Economic Wealth at the University of Oklahoma, won the 2007 Journal Record Innovator of the Year award. Under Porter’s leadership, OU launched the Office of Technology Development that has been instrumental in generating more Than $12 million in licensing and royalty revenue. He retired from the university earlier this year.
