Community Service Project Make a Difference on Campus

The Lambda Xi Chapter at the University of Mississippi raised awareness of heatstroke though a service project on campus. The project came to be as a result of an unfortunate accident where a local construction worker collapsed and died from heatstroke in late August. One week later, the chapter sprung into action, handing out over 1,200 bottles of water to students to remind them to stay hydrated on hot days.

Members of Lambda Xi discussed three potential projects that the chapter could have taken up. In addition to the water bottles, they talked about two projects dealing with cleaning areas in and around the football stadium that are filled with garbage after weekend games. Ultimately, they chose to hand out water bottles.

Andrew Pryor, Lambda Xi '06, coordinator of the event, said, "This was a time to help people become aware of the heat and its effect. It helped to make people aware of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia in the community."

It took the chapter almost seven hours to deplete their stock of water. Members worked in shifts from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and talked with

hundreds of students over the course of the day.

"This was a great opportunity to wear letters in the student union in a positive light," explained Pryor. "We are here to help musically and build brotherhood. It benefits the campus and our Fraternity."

Lambda Xi is part of a pilot phase of a new educational program under development by the Fraternity. This service project was undertaken as a part of the chapter's participation in the program.
