Thomas E. Dewey, Epsilon (Michigan) ’20, is perhaps one of Sinfonia’s most recognized members as a government figure. He was a three-term governor of New York, holding the position from 1942-54.

While governor, he ran as a Republican for president on three occasions (1940, 1944 and 1948). The last two attempts were as the Republican nominee. Although each attempt was unsuccessful, his last attempt against Harry S Truman is probably the most well-known because of one picture.

Early results were in favor of Dewey. The Chicago Tribune, which endorsed Dewey, went to press believing he would win the election. As more results were turned in overnight, Truman became the frontrunner and won the election. Even though the Tribune removed and replaced the issue, a number of issues made it into circulation and one reached the hands of Truman.

Before his fame as a political figure, Dewey was a respected volunteer in the organization. He was one of the Fraternity’s first province governors and appointed to the Eastern Province from 1922-1926. Additionally, we was the Fraternity’s Supreme Historian from 1922-24.
